One of my common rigs for simple sunfish fishing is a bait drop shot rig. Well loved amongst largemouth and smallmouth bass anglers, the drop shot fishing setup also works wonders on bluegill, redear, and other sunfish. This presentation allows the angler to suspend his bait at one level, twitching the rod tip and lifting to give it action, but allowing the bait to return to the original position after movement ceases.

The basic rig for the drop shot rig is demonstrated as follows. The hook is tied to the main line, but not at the bottom as in most conventional rigs. Instead, the hook is tied to the main line about 1-2 feet from the bottom of the line. At the bottom, a weight is attached. A split shot may be simply crimped on, or a heavier weight may be tied on. This keeps the bait ‘anchored’ to the bottom, but higher up above the weeds and debris found in most warmwater ponds.

Usually, bass anglers will rig different types of plastic fishing lures on drop shot rigs. But, for sunfish, I prefer adding a piece of nightcrawler, or a whole mealworm or waxworm. Red worms are also a well loved choice of bait. Two or three smaller pieces of bait or one spacious piece of bait on a small hook is how I set it up. Some people like using the tiny plastic grubs and plastic baits that stores like Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas sell, both online and in their retail locations. The Berkely Power Bait plastic worms (tiny red ones for trout) also are effective with this method. Then, after casting near a possible situation for these keen biters, I will preserve the line tight, and lightly twitch the rod tip. Usually, occasional twitches with long pauses works the best for me. But, in black water or low-light conditions, I will start with many rapid twitches, then switch to slow twitches once I start getting bites. Keep the line tight and bites should feel like small taps and tugs when the sunfish grab the bait. Set the hook when you feel a beneficial sized tug and get ready to reel ‘em in.

Panfish are a blast to rep and with the drop shot rig most people can catch them. It is a small more hard to setup than a conventional worm and bobber rig, but I prefer the greater control I have with a plunge shot rig. Go out to your local sunfish pond and try getting some fishing action on this rig! Have fun!

Lake Ray Hubbard is a reservoir located in Dallas, Kaufman, Collin, and Rockwall County. The lake, constructed by the Army Corps of engineers, was built as a water source for the North Texas region, and covers an area of approximately 25,000 acres. The project was started in 1964, impounded by 1968, and reached maximum perform extent by 1970. Being within twenty-five miles of downtown Dallas, the lake has become a recreational haven for those seeking to sailboat, jet-ski, fish, or simply go for a swim. (The lake serves as a training ground for aspiring sail boaters, and has even spawned an America’s Cup winner.)

I myself, being an avid fisherman, was more concerned with exploring the nooks and crannies of the lake in search of fish. I soon found out that the spacious reservoir offered an ample population of striper, hybrid striper, white bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, and crappie. My favorite pursuit soon became chasing the colossal schools of hybrids, and white bass (sandies) that roamed the waters. Once I located the circling gulls with my binoculars, I would spin it upwind of the birds, and start flinging my favorite slabs down to the bottom. The result was usually non-stop action, with fish hitting on every throw. No matter how many times I did this, I would become excited like it was my first time. The only problem that I had was navigating my aluminum Bass Tracker when the winds were high. The thirty horse hand-guided Mercury motor, with a pull cord, was ill-equipped to deal with the white caps generated by thirty mile an hour plus wind gust. I would often find myself locating the birds off in the distance, and by the time I battled the winds and waves to get there, the fish were done feeding. In the meantime, I would watch as the fishing guides in their fancy bass boats, blew past me and reaped the benefits for their clients. Since I had spent all my money on my house, I could not upgrade my boat, without the threat of death from my wife; so I sucked it up.

I had read a fishing describe in the Thursday Dallas Morning News that the fish were schooling on the south end of the lake advance the power plant. I immediately called up my Uncle Don, who often had the fish-itch much like myself, “Hey, the fishing are hitting on Hubbard; are you ready to drown a few worms? ” I questioned.

“You bet─tell me when and where, and I’ll be there,” he said.

“Meet me tomorrow morning at six o’clock at the Harbor Bay Marina, and we’ll go fish the lake out.”

“What about work? “

“Screw work!”

“I’ll be there.”

When I arrived the next morning my Uncle was rarin’ to go. We loaded the boat with our poles, tackle boxes, landing net, and last but not least, our coffee thermos. Plunking the tin can into the grey-green waters of the lake, I pulled the rip cord and the nautical lawn mower motor responded with a purr. “We’re out of here,” I said.

Guiding the boat under the I-30 pylons, we made our way to the south end of the lake were the power plant was located. As soon as we passed through the bridge we were bombarded by three foot white caps being generated by thirty mile an hour wind gust. Water shot over the side of the hull, and we were instantly drenched. “This could get hairy,” I said. “Are you ready to risk your life in order to catch some sand bass? “

“Absolutely,” he said.

“Then get ready.”

I grabbed my binoculars and tried to stand up, in an effort to spot the birds, but was nearly thrown into the water by a violent wave. Sitting down, I peered towards the power plant and spotted the birds, with several boats juxtaposed close to the action. “There they are!” I yelled, “the fish are schooling by the plant.”

“That’s about a mile away,” my uncle said.

“Say your prayers; we’re going for it.”

I turned the throttle full thrust. “Hang on,” I said. The boat bobbed up and down as we slowly chugged along, fighting the south winds. Fishing guides had also noticed the action and started zipping by us with their fancy two hundred horse bass boat rigs.

“Those sons of bitches just dusted us,” my uncle said.

“That’s alright, there’s plenty of fish for all of us,” I answered.

By the time we arrived the fishing frenzy had stopped and the boats had begun to disperse. I watched as a jovial group of fisherman high-fived each other while taking pictures of the fish they had honest caught. As we passed the boat I saw the name “Johnny Pro” stenciled on the side.

“Can you own that guy will charge those chumps two hundred dollars for a half day of sand bass fishing? ” my uncle said to me.

The light bulb lit up!

“Hell, we can do that,” I said, “all we need to do is come out here during the middle of the week when the lake is empty. We can fill this boat with fish, and get paid for it. Let’s go obtain some cards printed up and start our possess guide service!”

The cards were printed and tacked to the bulletin boards of all the local tackle shops. Within a week, we had our first call. An elderly man wanted to go out for a half day of fishing. “What kind of fish do you want to catch? ” I questioned.

“Don’t matter─just want to catch some fish.”

“Meet us at the Harbor Bay tomorrow morning at six sharp.”

“We hand landed our first client and excitement filled the air as we prepared the boat for our first guided fishing excursion. “Can you believe that we’re going to go fishing and accept paid for it? ” I questioned my uncle.

“It’s like I died and went to heaven,” he answered.

We gerry-rigged an extended bass boat seat and mounted it to the front of the Bass Tracker. “When that ancient boy gets up here and we get on those fish, he is going to have the time of his life,” I told my uncle.

The next morning we picked our client up at the pier and headed out into the dusky, misty air. I had come equipped with my binoculars so that I could scan the horizon for seagulls, but couldn’t for a single bird. We puttered around the lake for nearly four hours without locating a single school of fish. “Don’t concern, we’ll be on fish soon,” I said, as I started to break into an anxiety sweat. “Let’s go grab some of those huge, stout, grease-burgers from Doc’s, and then we’ll continue to fish─We’ll get the burgers to go, so that we don’t ruin any time.”

“Sounds excellent to me,” our client agreed.

My uncle and I entered the lakeside establishment and placed our order. “What are we going to do if we don’t if we don’t get this guy on any fish? ” I questioned my uncle.

“I suppose we could throw him in the lake, so that he can sleep with the fishes like they do on the Sopranos─we can’t afford any negative publicity.”

The clerk came out of the grill and handed us a paper bag with the burgers inside (the grease from the meat was already dripping from the oil-stained sack). “That will be ten dollars gentlemen,” she said.

We quickly made our blueprint back to the dock, got into the boat, and continued our hunt. After my second bite from the burger, I looked up and saw hundreds of gulls attacking the water. “Thar she blows! Full speed ahead,” I shouted to my uncle, who now manned the engine. The client, still seated in the extended bass seat in the front of the boat, grabbed his rod with one hand, and continued his assault on the burger with the other. My uncle, with grease dripping from his chin and oozing from his fingers, turned to full throttle and headed towards the schooling fish. The engine was maxed out at twenty-five miles an hour, when disaster struck. My uncle’s grease coated hand slid off the steering guide, and the boat took a severe right angle. I looked up and saw our client flying horizontally through the air like Superman without his cape. “What the F……..!” he screamed, with a contorted stare of horror frozen on his face, while still grasping the burger, before doing a head plant in the lake. I turned and looked at my uncle, “What the hell was that? “

“Oops,” he said, “I guess we don’t have to distress about throwin’ him in the lake anymore.”

Walleye are a predatory fish that feeds on smaller fish and other creatures in the water. While walleye will probably eat about anything at one time or another, perhaps the two best baits are the nightcrawler and the minnow. As the nightcrawler is the most widely available bait in most parts of America, let’s take a look at fishing with nightcrawlers first.

Probably most fishermen and fisherwomen got their start catching bluegill and other panfish with a bit of nightcrawler under a bobber (or float). While fishing for walleye under a bobber is not all that accepted it can be done. Walleye that have been found suspended in a certain area can be fished with a bobber quite productively. A river with a slow current can also be fished with a nightcrawler under a bobber to slowly troll the bait through likely walleye areas. The standard nightcrawler rig for walleye is to troll the nightcrawler on a lumber sinker across the bottom. Simply allowing the nightcrawler to drift along the bottom in a slow challenging boat allow the fisherman to hit a lot of territory with itsy-bitsy work. A bank fisherman can slowly fish a similar rig along the bottom. Another way to fish a nightcrawler is in combination with a spinner. The spinner adds flash and vibration to further attract the walleye.

A minnow can be ancient-fashioned as bait for walleye with similar methods of the nightcrawler presentations as listed above. One advantage of the live minnow is that it does not need to be trolled as it can provide its own movement to entice the walleye. Minnows seem to be more productive than nightcrawlers in attracting a strike in the spring, at least in my experience.

Leeches are another productive lure for walleye. Frogs, salamanders, and other creatures are frail as bait for walleye as well. Nearly all of my walleye fishing with bait is done with nightcrawlers for the simple reason that they are easily obtained and simple to care for, but minnows and other baits certainly have their place in catching walleye.

Lake fishing really is not hard to master and with a small patience you will be coming home with your ice chest full of excellent eating lake trout or crappie. Fishing is a ritual. In the middle of summer, every Sunday morning is the same at my house. At five a.m., I wake to the squeal of my alarm clock. I jump from my bed and into my rubber fishing boots, grab my rod and reel, and race to the creek. Usually, by this time, my neighbor has stopped and reminded me to go set aside some pants on.

When I finally do make it to the creek, fully dressed, the real challenge starts. I must choose the right bait. With so many to pick from, like the “Kinami Crank,” or the “Storm Wildeye Rattling Swim Grub,” who knows which to choose? I usually just go with the “Red and Purple Doohickey Gobstoppin’ Bobber Hopper”. Although they all work the same, some are more fun to pronounce than others.

Once the right bait is picked, I can initiate seducing the fish. No, that does not mean originate tickling it behind its gills. It means, make the fish want to take the bait. I have found that it is better to offer the fish “reaction” presentations rather than “feeding” presentations. In other words, don’t throw food to a fish that isn’t hungry. Instead, consume mannerisms that will trigger their internal instincts. For example, suppose a man is shopping for a television, he may not need a novel one, but he is going to buy the largest one they have. It’s in their blood.

Now that you have found the fish, all you have to do is catch them. Sounds simple enough, right? The pros will offer you a lot of advice, but I can also give you some excellent advice. First, call a friend and invite them along. Second, go to the nearest bait shop/beer store, buy a dozen worms, and a couple dozen beers. Every time one of you says, “damn skeeters,” drink. This will make your fishing experience a excellent one.

So you’re at the creek with a friend, you have your bait, you have your rod and reel, and you have your refreshments. It’s time to fish.

The early spring through the fall is the best time to fish, which works out fantastic for me because I’m not into ice fishing. My favorite time to fish is when the weather is warm and the beer is cold.

A really noble time to fish is right after the spawning period. The fish are hungry, but too tired to do anything about it. It’s also the simplest time to fish. Just place a worm on your hook, cast the line into the water, kick back and watch the bobber. “Damn skeeters”. Once the bobber goes under, yank on the pole to “status the hook,” this means, impale the hook into the fishes face. He won’t delight in it that much, but it’s a lot of fun to watch.

Now that you have a fish embedded onto your hook, just reel it to shore, take it off of the hook, and start again.

If you choose to go on a fishing trip with your family, you’re going to need a lot more beer. When I take my two children, (Darren 8, Katlynn 6), I never get to make one cast. One fishing trip will be embedded into my mind forever.

After a thousand tries, Katlynn finally casts her line into the water. It was two feet from shore, but it was in the water. Darren is up to bat. He casts the line an simple thirty yards out. I own there was a tear in my eye at this point in time. But, tears of joy turn to tears of sorrow in a matter of seconds when there are children involved.

Darren’s bobber was underwater. He had a fish. Unfortunately, when the fish “took the bait,” it jerked the pole out of my son’s hands. “Damn skeeters!” On a excellent note, we never really “lost” the pole. Every now and then, the pole would swim past us with the fish aloof attached, as if it were taunting us.

Katlynn chose to save the day. About the third time the pole came near us, she cast her line right to it. If only she had held onto her pole. “Damn skeeters!”

With the loss of two fishing poles, and no caught fish, it was time to leave this fishing hell. At least I didn’t have to grief about going over our limit.

The amount, and the size, of fish you can keep varies from state to state. In Ohio, size limits vary between lakes. At the lake I usually like to fish, there is an 18-inch size limit. The last time I landed an 18-inch bass, I thought I caught Shamu.

It was July of last year. A fellow co-worker and I had left work and ventured back to the gravel pit. Usually, I cast three or four times before I even get a bite. Not this day. My very first cast got a “hit”! It happened so quick, yet I remember it so well. I casted the line, the bass took the hook, I dropped the pole, kicked over my beer, and fell on the ground. I don’t reckon I will ever hear the ruin of that.

After the “drop, kick, fall” incident, I chose to try another approach. Some people say not to fish over bass “beds,” because it hurts bass populations. (“Beds,” are the place where fish lay their eggs). So there’s my new approach. Okay, so it’s not ethically right, but let’s be honest, I’ll place a bullet into a fish if no one is watching.

Once you’re hovering over bass “beds,” you don’t even need bait. You can unbiased throw a hook in and “snag” a fish. This plot is highly illegal, and you may end up behind bars.

Would you believe there are really rules of fishing etiquette? The most well loved rule is to avoid disturbing fellow anglers and frightening away fish. Talk about a downer! If there were a group of rangers that went around upholding these “laws,” everyone I know would be banned from fishing for life, myself included. If there is a large group of people fishing in the same small place, there must be fish there. If you start running around like a maniac with arms in the air screaming “the fish will kill us all,” it’s not considered honorable etiquette. But, they will leave and you will have your ideal fishing status.

Now that you have learned a thing or two about fishing, grab a pole and a beer, head down to the creek, scare the bejesus out of whoever is there, take their area, and launch the fishing process. If anyone says anything about your technique, or fishing “manners,” just tell them, “kiss my bass.”

Here’s a look at one situation, Billingsgate Island and Shoals on Cape Cod Bay, accessible from Orleans and Wellfleet, where schools of stripers 34″ and longer feed in grand enough numbers that commercial striped bass fishermen and recreational fishermen alike rarely have misfortune meeting their respective daily bag limits.

Located roughly five miles south of Provincetown and bordered by Cape Cod National Seashore’s holdings at Jeremy Point and Gargantuan Island, Wellfleet, the flats are accessible to anglers in boats ranging from kayaks to tin skiffs and powerboats. At low tide, the fishery’s shallows can be walked and sightfished.

The fishery lies along the inner eastern edge of the 35-mile-long inner forearm of lower Cape Cod, offshore of the small outer Cape villages uncluttered by the commercialism and overdevelopment that plague upper and mid Cape Cod. Swept by tides that course in from the veritable open-ocean striped bass holding pen of Stellwaggen Bank off Provincetown, Billingsgate is best fished – jigged or trolled – along the edges of its shallows where the shallows drop off to deep water. The area sees an influx of bluefin tuna during the fall.

To fish the area you’ll need three types of gear: deepwater trolling gear: tubes-and-worms; trolling jigs such as the locally known hoochie; and any number of soft plastics, such as sluggos and shads and a few metal spoons such kastmasters of Hopkins lures.

At low tide the area’s western flats nearly triple the flats visible at mid-tide, forming a vast matrix of intricately interconnected pools and embayments filled with gin-clear water cut by deep channels.

Off Billingsgate Island and Jeremy Point proper, both of which emerge just a few hours into low tide, best to resort to deep-trolling tactics: tubes and jigs on lead core or mono or wire. The dropoffs simple to spot: look for serpentine boat channels marked by red nun and green can buoys off submerged Billingsgate Island. Depth drop-offs are abrupt and severe.

But perhaps the most fun is to be had on the flats and in the guzzles and drainage sluices which snake in from the deep water. Here use spincast gear: shads, poppers, plugs and metals. Exhaust steel leader to prevent bite-offs by the bluefish that also haunt the shallows.

On the area’s shallows between Jeremy Point and Billingsgate Island, and off Jeremy Point southwest over the so-called Plantation Shallows, one handy tactic is to run the boat up onto the edge of a flat, wedge an anchor in, and stalk the flats on foot as you cast spincast gear into the flats’ myriad pools, embayments, and drop-offs.

Fishing the flats requires small more than a tin skiff, kayak zodiac or other seaworthy small boat. Smaller boats can hand-launch from the National Seashore’s tiny parking place off Wequesset Road. The lot is down arrive the shoreline on the left, just after Wequesset Road’s Herring River bridge. You can slide in your skiff or kayak or zodiac through the break in the eelgrass on two hours of either side of low tide.

If you’re a powerboater, best to launch from Rock Harbor in Orleans, just off route 6 not far from the Orleans traffic circle, or from Wellfleet’s surfaced municipal ramp at Wellfleet Harbor (Route 6 east 10 miles after the Orleans rotary, left onto Long Pond Road to Wellfleet Harbor).

From the Wellfleet waterfront, it’s roughly three nautical miles to Jeremy Point, where the flats’ deepwater drop-offs lie south, west, and north of the long and narrow Jeremy Point bar certain by its dun-colored sand.

The flats and dropoffs can be fished at all tides, but tend to be more productive on tidal flows three hours on either side of low.

Although Billingsgate is part of Cape Cod’s heavily-fished east-facing National Seashore, its flats on Cape Cod Bay are still very much underutilized – you’ll often have the fishery to yourself.

A few caveats about Cape Cod’s predictable traffic snarls. Friday nights and Sunday afternoons are nightmarish along the Cape’s major routes: 3, 28, and 6. Backups during peak travel times can snake for miles. Thus, view to travel after 8:00 p.m. or so on Friday nights, likewise on Sundays evenings. At all costs try to avoid mid-afternoons on Saturdays and Fridays.

Luckily Wellfleet, Billingsgate and Jeremy Point rarely suffer such congestion onwater or off during peak disappear hours times – so if you get stuck in traffic on Route 6 on the way down, rest assured that you’ll find plenty of breathing room once you get there.

Beaver Lake is in the Ozark highlands of Northwest Arkansas on the headwaters of the White River. The White River tributaries are well-known for small mouth bass, and Beaver Lake is no exception. Greers Ferry Lake spans the Small Red river. It is nestled in the foothills of the North Central Ozark Mountains. It is located near the towns of Greers Ferry and Heber Springs, Arkansas. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service operates a trout hatchery below the dam and stocks the Small River River with rainbow, brook and cut throat trout.

Fourche La Fave River in West Central Arkansas supplies Lake Nimrod with its water supply. This lake is known for crappie fishing.

The Saline River, above Benton, Arkansas, is one of the very best fishing spots in Western Arkansas. Small mouth bass, warmouth, long ear, green sunfish, bluegills, and crappie are abundant in this river.

Lake Conway, near the town of Conway, is in Central Arkansas. This man made lake is another year round fishing spot for anglers. It is known for its bass fishing.

Lake Dardanelle is in the River Valley area of the State. The shoreline of 315 miles proves to be the perfect dwelling for fishing.

All of these lakes and streams are near camping areas, or towns where accommodations are available. Fishing licenses are available at various small grocery stores and Wal-Mart stores year-round in Arkansas. There are many stores that sell fishing gear, bait, and various sundries in the immediate area of the lakes. Boats may be rented at many marinas that dot the shoreline of these fishing spots.
